Welcome to the May/June issue of American Fine Art Magazine. This edition is devoted to New York and the rise of the modernist movement—one of the most innovative and transformative periods in American art. From the early stirrings at the turn of the 20th century through the 1960s, a powerful creative momentum took hold. Artists challenged tradition, moving beyond representation toward bold experimentation. What emerged was a new visual language defined by energy, abstraction, and a deeply personal approach to subject matter. These qualities continue to captivate collectors and scholars today. Explore this defining period of American art further in our Collector’s Focus: The Modernist Perspective, beginning on Page 48.
Equally compelling is our coverage of the American Art Fair, one of the most anticipated events of the season. New York once again becomes a gathering place for collectors and curators, and both managing editor Sarah Gianelli and I will be attending several key events. We begin with Initiatives in Art and Culture’s American Art Conference and its 30th anniversary program, Boundless Horizons, held May 13 through 15 at Heritage Auctions. Listen to Episode 37 of our podcast, the American Art Collective, to hear a one-on-one conversation with Lisa Koenigsberg, IAC president, as she discusses her education and experiences in the historic art world. Her exceptional symposium offers a rich blend of scholarship and dialogue, and space is still available. The timing coincides with the American Art Fair, which runs May 16 through 19. Read more on Page 104.
We also feature a compelling Tête-à-Tête with New York gallerist and long-time American Fine Art Magazine friend and collaborator Debra Force. It is a must-read conversation filled with insight and anecdotes. This issue is designed to help you plan your time in New York this May, as the city comes alive with energy, conversation and extraordinary works of art. If you are attending, I invite you to reach out to Sarah Gianelli or myself—we would be delighted to connect. Until then, enjoy the issue and the enduring power of American art at its most visionary.
Best Regards,
