Illustration Art
Swann Auction Galleries’ Illustration Art auction celebrates the genre of illustration as both art and cultural record, offering collectors the opportunity to acquire pieces that span genres, media and moments.
Book illustration is led by cover art by H. Lawrence Hoffman for the 1942 gothic novel, Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier. The piece epitomizes the dramatic visual language of 1940s paperbacks, featuring moody, atmospheric imagery that helped shape film noir aesthetics and established conventions of gothic novel cover design. It’s estimated to fetch between $3,000 and $4,000. Mid-century magazine illustration is represented with work by real life “Mad Men” Edwin Georgi and Thornton Utz. Appearing on the pages of the Saturday Evening Post and Ladies’ Home Journal, their artwork embraces the period’s polished realism and narrative clarity. Also of note is Bruce McCall’s 1994 cover for the New Yorker.
Exhibition hours are 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, and Monday, June 15, through Wednesday, June 17. Bidding is available through online platforms, absentee, phone and live in-person.
